According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 46.7 km (18.0 mi). 46.4 km (17.9 mi) of it is land and 0.3 km (0.1 mi) of it (0.55%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 23,378 people, 8,299 households, and 6,224 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 503.4/km (1,303.9/mi). There were 8,834 housing units at an average density of 190.2/km (492.7/mi). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.10% White, 25.66% African American, 0.40% Native American, 1.64% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.40% from other races, and 2.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.40% of the population.

There were 8,299 households out of which 43.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 19.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.0% were non-families. 19.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.21.
